NDFS Undergraduate Degree Options :-

Students in the Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Department choose an emphasis in Food Science, Nutrition Science, or Dietetics. Each is briefly summarized below. For more details, refer to the Fact Sheets available for each one.

FOOD SCIENCE: Accredited by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Great for students who are interested in working in the food industry or doing research for Government agencies like the USDA or FDA. Focuses on food product development and food safety. Science-based curriculum. Excellent salary and great job opportunities. Graduates find employment in the food industry or pursue research opportunities. Food Science Fact Sheet.

NUTRITION SCIENCE: Excellent springboard into going to medical school or graduate school. A blend of the major sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, nutrition, etc). Curriculum is based on admission requirements for University of Utah Medical School. A BS degree in Nutrition Science is not as functional as one in Food Science or Dietetics. However, students who do post-graduate work qualify for excellent jobs in research and medicine. Nutrition Science Fact Sheet.

DIETETICS: A professional program accredited by the American Dietetic Association. Prepares students to become registered dietitians (RDs) and work as clinicians, educators, and nutrition advocates in clinical settings (hospitals, nursing homes), community settings (schools, wellness programs), food service management (in schools, healthcare facilities, restaurants), or private consulting positions.
