Candidates for graduate study in Food Sciences need a background in chemistry, physics, mathematics, bacteriology, and physiology. Prior coursework in food science is desirable. If deficient in these areas, a student may be accepted with the understanding that the supervisory committee will require competence equivalent to a BS degree in nutrition and food sciences in the preliminary (MS) or comprehensive (Ph.D.) examination.  Students must meet some departmental requirements in addition to requirements of the School of Graduate Studies.

Before being accepted into the department, potential graduate students must be accepted by a faculty member who is willing to add them to his or her research team.

Always consult the USU Graduate School for the more up-to-date requirements for MS and Ph.D. programs.
